Experts from universities in Netherlands, United Kingdom, Portugal, Greece and Romania, provide different cultural insights into sustainable design in Europe
Under the motto ‘From the local thinking to the global Project, designing in a sustainable world’, the Technical School of Engineering of the CEU Cardenal Herrera University will be hosting the ‘International Week ESET, from today until the 8th February. Contributing to the event will be the International Relations and Research Vice-rectories, five teachers and architects from universities in Holland, Great Britain, Portugal, Greece and Romania, will provide both their different cultural insights into sustainable design in Europe and their teaching experience to pupils taking part in this event.
The professionals invited to the iWeek will also arrange a workshop for students which will focus on sustainable construction and using shipping containers as the foundation for habitable structures. This will enable the students to work on their design proposals for the shipping containers architectural competition sponsored by the CEU-UCH and the Nueva Gestion de Espacios. The aim of the competition is to create a residential area that integrates disabled and older students in the same urban space. This space will be viewed as a residence of intergenerational solidarity, designed from recycling the containers.
Invited architects and designers
Making an appearance among the intellectuals and professionals invited to the CEU Cardenal Herrera University´s international week, is the Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus, professor of the Universidad Autónoma de Lisboa since 1998 and of the Accademia di Architectura de Mendrizio since 200. Along with his brother, Manuel founded the architect´s firm, Aires Mateus y Asociados en 1988 and has also taught at prestigious education centres such as, the Graduate School of Design at the University of Harvard, in North America.
Also taking part in this iWeek, will be the Design professor of the Technische Universiteit of Eindhoven, Holland, Miguel Bruns, who obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Delft and obtain a Fulbright grant from the Centre for Design Research at the Stanford University of North America.
Nicola Crowson, an architect who has designed important works in the English cities of Salisbury and Winchester, is currently a professor and researcher at the Portsmouth School of Architecture.
Dimitra S. Nikolau, professor of the National Technical University of Athens, carried out her Post-doctoral studies at University College London and is also a member of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture and of the Greek Architects Association.
Mihai Corneliu Driscu is the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of architecture ‘G.M.Cantacuzino’ of the Universitatea Technica Gheorghe Asachi in Iasi, Romania. He is a renowned architect, especially in the city of Iasi, capital of the Moldova region, where he has managed the restoration of many different civil and religious historical buildings.
This international week forms part of a series of commemorative events held this year in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Industrial Design Engineering, which the CEU founded in Spain. It is also the tenth anniversary of the Architecture Programme of the CEU-Cardenal Herrera University.
