· Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Optics and Optometry at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University, Dr Miranda appears on the “Top List of Women in European Vision Research and Ophthalmology” drawn up by the European Vision Institute (EVI)

Dr María Miranda, CEU UCH lecturer and Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Optics and Optometry at the University, has been chosen on the “Top List of Women in European Vision Research and Ophthalmology”, drawn up by the European Vision Institute (EVI). This organization brings together stakeholders from across industry and academia in order to promote research to prevent and treat eye diseases and vision disorders.

New therapeutic targets for eye diseases

The CEU UCH lecturer María Miranda has focused her research on diseases affecting the retina and the central nervous system. She is the lead researcher of an eye pathology research group at the University (Estrategias terapéuticas en patologías oculares), which focuses on identifying new therapeutic targets and determining the molecular mechanisms involved in retinitis pigmentosa (RP), diabetic retinopathy and dry eyes.

For María Miranda, “we still have a long way go regarding the early diagnosis of many diseases affecting the visual system and the treatment of the whole range of diseases which impair or reduce our ability to see”. These diseases reduce patients’ quality of life as they can affect their relationship with their environment and “today, we can use different technological approaches to find solutions and improve the quality of life of patients with visual impairment,” she said.”

Regarding being chosen on the list of top female researchers in Europe by the EVI, she said, “besides the fact that I’m proud to appear on the list alongside some great women researchers who I admire, I think it’s also an opportunity for us to work together.”

European Vision Institute (EVI)

The EVI is a European network which aims to promote research on vision and

ophthalmology. By recognizing these leading female figures in the field, the EVI aims to foster greater links between them and raise the profile of their research.
