- 5th year Medicine students from either stream on the Castellón and Alfara del Patriarca (Valencia) campuses can apply.
The Office of the Vice-Rector for Internationalization and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University have created a new International Clinical Placement Scholarship programme for Medicine students to undertake training in the USA. All students on either the Spanish stream on the Castellón campus or the bilingual English-Spanish stream on the Alfara del Patriarca campus (Valencia) can apply.
This is a ground-breaking programme in Spain, enabling CEU UCH medical students to undertake clinical rotations at prestigious hospitals and healthcare centres in Chicago and New York.
These scholarships provide funding for three rounds of clinical rotations at US hospitals together with a learning plan enabling the training to be formally recognized in Spain. This means that these students will only have to undertake a further two rotations on their return to complete the external practical training component for the sixth year of the Medicine degree.
Furthermore, the International Clinical Placement Scholarship programme includes liability insurance, which is required for placements in the USA.
Training which opens doors to a career in the USA
The CEU UCH Faculty of Sciences has one of the largest proportions of international students in Europe. Currently, more than 30% of students study health sciences programmes are from countries from across the world.
This scholarship programme, then, is yet more evidence of the University’s commitment to being international. The Office of the Vice-Rector for Internationalization has led the creation of this scholarship programme for clinical placements in the USA in order to enhance our Medicine students’ international training and intercultural awareness.
The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Verónica Veses, believes that the programme provides students with a unique learning opportunity, as it opens up the possibility of a medical career in the USA: being able to gain clinical training at US healthcare centres is essential in order to be able to undertake the “steps” of the medical licensing examination in the USA.
The award of an International Clinical Placement Scholarship and a period of training in the USA also has other benefits: it enhances the holder’s CV, and it provides an opportunity both to practise and improve the use of English in medical settings and to network internationally.
“This innovative scholarship programme further enhances our students’ training so that they can excel as medical professionals and serve society to the very best of their ability.”
Chirag Sheth, Vice-Rector for Internationalization at CEU UCH
