Its goal is to transform waste generated from olive production process into sustainable and valuable products, such as animal feed, functional additives, biodegradable packaging, and biogas. The project, entitled \u201c<strong>Repurposing olive waste in circular economy solutions for feeds, additives, packaging, and biogas (OliWa)<\/strong>\u201d, and <strong>funded by the European Union through the <a href=\"https:\/\/prima-med.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PRIMA programme<\/a><\/strong> involves 24 partners from six Mediterranean countries: Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, and Algeria.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CEU UCH team in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/people\/OliWa-Project\/61576754888143\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OliWa project<\/a><\/strong> is made up of researchers from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/grupos-lineas-investigacion\/investigacion-en-produccion-y-nutricion-animal-avifeed-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AviFeed Science<\/a><\/strong> group, which is dedicated to animal production and nutrition. The lead researchers for the project are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/cgarces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof Carlos Garc\u00e9s Narro<\/a><\/strong>, Professor of Animal Production, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/mariola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Mariola Soler Sanchis<\/a>,<\/strong> Senior Lecturer, who are both affiliated to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at CEU UCH. The team also includes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/olga-piquer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Olga Piquer<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/joseanto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Jos\u00e9 Antonio Garc\u00eda Bautista<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/maria-palomarlloris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Mar\u00eda Palomar<\/a><\/strong>, and trainee researcher <strong>Araceli Orozco<\/strong>.   As part of this project, the AviFeed Science group will be responsible for developing functional <strong>feed<\/strong> for <strong>laying hens <\/strong>that includes<strong>natural olive extracts<\/strong>, along with flour and fats from insects bred on substrates derived from olive tree waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Experts in avian nutrition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/grupos-lineas-investigacion\/investigacion-en-produccion-y-nutricion-animal-avifeed-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AviFeed Science group at CEU UCH<\/a><\/strong> has extensive research experience in avian nutrition, with numerous studies on zootechnical performance, egg quality, animal welfare, intestinal health and microbiota, especially in poultry. For its lead researcher, <strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/cgarces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Carlos Garc\u00e9s of CEU UCH<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cthe OliWa project offers us a strategic opportunity to consolidate the applied research we do in the AviFeed Science group in the agri-food field. And it\u2019s also a chance to strengthen our international presence and to create links with the circular economy, sustainability and functional animal production\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with designing, evaluating, and validating feed for laying hens with natural olive extracts and insect flours and fats, the CEU UCH team will also take on other tasks, as explained by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/mariola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Mariola Soler<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cIn this project, we will conduct <strong>animal nutrition studies<\/strong> and physical, chemical, and sensory testing of eggs obtained after using these ingredients as feed. We will also evaluate the nutraceutical effects of the extracts in animal products, including the improvement of the <strong>fatty acid and antioxidant profile in eggs<\/strong>. And we will communicate our results to local producers in order to promote sustainable business models in the Mediterranean agri-food sector.\u00bb  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The OliWa project is funded by the European Union through the PRIMA programme and involves 24 partners from six Mediterranean countries: Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, and Algeria<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OliWa: animal feed, packaging, biogas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to considering feed formulations such as the one designed by CEU UCH researchers for laying hens, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OliwaPrima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OliWa project<\/a><\/strong> will analyse the <strong>antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of natural olive extracts<\/strong>. It will also evaluate the potential of insect farming using olive waste, the development of biodegradable active packaging, enriched with natural extracts and polysaccharides derived from insects and olive waste, and the production of biogas from insect waste, manure and olive by-products. The dissemination of its results will promote new sustainable business models in the Mediterranean area.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The OliWa project, launched this June and scheduled to last three years, receives \u20ac4.5 million in funding from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/prima-med.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Programa Europeo PRIMA<\/a>: Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area<\/strong> and <strong>European Union <\/strong>(Grant Agreement Number 2432 \u2014 OLIWA). This European initiative, coordinated by the University of Turin, aims to support R&amp;D&amp;I to improve the efficiency and sustainability of agri-food systems and the quality, availability and management of water in the Mediterranean area.
