Spanish teenagers are underperforming, in both their understanding of the descriptions of maths problems and in providing solutions to them. This weakness is something that can be addressed earlier in the process, during primary education. A solution could be the introduction of more <a href=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/innovacion-y-formacion-las-claves-de-los-maestros-del-futuro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effective learning techniques<\/a>, which includes making sure that <strong>they motivate the children<\/strong> to learn. And that is precisely what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/estudios\/grado\/educacion-primaria?-gl=1*141t662*-ga*MTg4MjI0OTY5OS4xNTg4MjQ1NjQz*-ga-TKWFX90NQ5*MTYxOTQzNDAzNS4xMC4xLjE2MTk0MzY5MzkuMzE.&amp;-ga=2.255309192.1218899969.1619427661-1882249699.1588245643&amp;-gac=1.24985288.1619178642.Cj0KCQjwoaz3BRDnARIsAF1RfLdKPueUAr6gzBQL7TdfWTMxos2zEuGzhI8uIjWURWc-tZm6Z-rgNBUaAqz4EALw-wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEU Primary Education<\/a> students are trying to do as part of the second-year course \u201cIntroduction to Mathematics for Primary School Teachers\u201d (Fundamentos de las Matem\u00e1ticas para el Maestro de Primaria).<\/p>\n<p>A recent project that they\u2019ve undertaken is \u201cMaths with TikTok\u201d. Split into teams, the students had to create addition and subtraction problems for schoolchildren using this popular video platform. And after several weeks in which <strong>the different teams have been working hard together, they had to present the maths problems they\u2019d created to their fellow students<\/strong>, via TikTok, ensuring that the descriptions were understandable, attractive and challenging, in order to elicit pupil engagement and motivation.<\/p>\n<p>V\u00eddeo de tik tok\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Educational networks<\/h3>\n<p>These CEU Primary Education students have certainly seized this opportunity and have really got the most out of this novel initiative. \u201cThe project has opened my eyes to the impact that the surprise factor has in education, as creating content that captures pupils\u2019 attention generates <strong>enthusiasm and leads to improved learning outcomes<\/strong>,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>In\u00e9s Rodr\u00edguez.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the fact that their use is controversial,\u201d she added, \u201csocial networks can play a very important role in education young children. So long as you ensure that they are used in the right way, they can help us to make a greater connection with each child\u2019s true context and communicate in a way they can relate to. Using the TikTok platform increases the pupils\u2019 interest and enables them to have fun while they learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018We\u2019ve learnt how to take an app that children usually see as a form of entertainment and give it an educational use.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her fellow student\u00a0<strong>Silvia Gollart<\/strong>\u00a0is also a fan of using information and communication technology (ICT) and social networks in teaching. \u201cWith this project, we\u2019ve learnt how to take an app that children usually see as a form of entertainment and give it an educational use,\u201d she said, adding that \u201ccombining things that children are interested in with the content that the teacher needs to get across is a very useful approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Competency-based learning<\/h3>\n<p>However, this trainee teacher also feels that care must be used. \u201cExcessive use of electronic devices can lead to addiction. So, it\u2019s about taking advantage of them as resources for learning (combined with other educational resources) rather than just as forms of enjoyment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In short, this project has enabled these trainee teachers to consider one the most taxing challenges for the Spanish education sector as a whole, while also enabling them to develop further<strong> key competencies they will need in their future careers. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These include digital competencies, the use of mathematics and also, as Silvia said, \u201clanguage skills, how to work as part of a team, and also learning to learn, as we were also making our own learning discoveries as we were creating the maths problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Teamwork<\/h3>\n<p>With most innovative projects, teamwork is the key \u2013 and this was no exception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking together as a group enables each student to make a contribution drawing on his or her own creativity and it also allows different procedures to emerge which lead to a common solution,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Margarita Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>, the lecturer behind \u201cMaths with TikTok\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEveryone learns from everyone else<\/strong>, they respect each other\u2019s ideas and then, together, they choose the best one, which they later present to the other students. The wider group can then consider these ideas and make suggestions for improvement,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The students are of the same mind. \u201cBy working as part of a team, we\u2019ve all <strong>learnt how to respect each other\u2019s opinions,<\/strong>\u201d said Silvia.
