class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/estudios\/grado\/odontologia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">both the Spanish and English streams of the Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Dentistry programme at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University<\/a> in Valencia (Spain) and the\u00a0Universidad Santo Tom\u00e1s in Bucaramanga (Colombia)\u00a0have taken part in an international project, coming together to study the incidence, prevalence, aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the oral mucosa in both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This educational experience formed part of a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) project <\/strong>undertaken by both universities \u2013 the <strong>first of its type for the Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Dentistry programme.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project has enabled the students <strong>to improve their knowledge of oral medicine<\/strong>,while also giving them<strong> a first taste of international research teams<\/strong>.It has been a true opportunity for development and learning, using digital tools<strong> to connect online in real time<\/strong>, and taking advantage of<strong> new approaches to collaborative learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Experience of international scientific collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pathologies of the oral cavity include diseases affecting the mouth, the oral mucosa, the jawbones and related structures, such as the saliva glands, the temporomandibular joints, facial muscles and the perioral skin (the skin around the mouth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1060\" height=\"594\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of three months, 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 3<sup>rd<\/sup> year Dentistry students from CEU UCH and Universidad Santo Tom\u00e1s studied the prevalence of malignant and pre-malignant oral diseases (oral lichen planus, actinic cheilitis, &nbsp;leucoplakia, and erythroplasia) and detection and treatment procedures in Colombia and Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the time differences, the students and lecturers from both universities were able to follow joint lectures and online sessions for group work. The students were distributed into mixed groups of four or five students, who then undertook a study together which they had to present in English in the form of a poster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This experience enabled the students <strong>both to apply the knowledge they had learnt about oral medicine and to improve their communication skills<\/strong>, as they shared information and ideas and discussed problems and solutions. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brice Bouchet and Aroa Bote,\u00a0<\/strong>Dentistry students at CEU UCH, both feel they benefited from the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><em>The activity has enabled them \u201cto share Dentistry student also highlighted the value of this educational activity, as it enables students \u201cto consolidate what we know and experience other cultures at the same time\u201d. href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/maria-lloria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mar\u00eda Lloria<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/celiahaya\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Celia Haya<\/strong><\/a>, lecturers at CEU UCH, and\u00a0<strong>Sandra Juliana Rueda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Patricio Javier Jarpa<\/strong>, from the Universidad Santo Tom\u00e1s in Bucaramanga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>This activity\u00a0<strong>enriches the students\u2019 education and enables them to both gain intercultural skills and learn how to work in multicultural international teams<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CEU UCH lecturer Mar\u00eda Lloria remarked that this project \u201c<em>has enabled students to gain their first experience of the research process, working autonomously with students from other countries<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mar\u00eda Lloria and Celia Haya agreed that the students\u2019 generosity with their time stood out \u2013 they all volunteered for this educational project \u2013 together with their commitment to the dentistry profession that they showed over the course of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI think it truly has been a collaborative international learning experience, and it could be replicated with a greater number of students and learning contents in the future<\/em>,\u201d said Celia Haya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lecturers from the Universidad Santo Tom\u00e1s in Bucaramanga also highlighted the determination <strong>to promote closer links between the two institutions and carry out further joint
