Yet this is one of the challenges that first-year CEU UCH students on the Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Political Science took on this year, as part of <strong>Political Science Lab<\/strong>,\u00a0a new project that launched this year and which aims to revolutionise the way that future political scientists learn at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is one of the challenges 1st year Political Science undergraduates have taken on as part of Political Science Lab<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis challenge is the first step we\u2019d like our students to take towards learning based on personal reflection, identification of the knowledge they have, the realization that there are connections between different areas of knowledge and the questioning of the political and social reality around them. That was our aim with this exercise and the students have responded by expressing their concerns and proposing some really creative solutions, based on real research. But this is just the beginning,\u201d said one of the students\u2019 lecturers, <strong>Elvira Alonso.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-132669\" src=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1298\" height=\"1179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj.jpg 1298w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-1060x963.jpg 1060w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-768x698.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-1200x1090.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-150x136.jpg 150w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-696x632.jpg 696w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-1068x970.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/yujyj-462x420.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1298px) 100vw, 1298px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of the many interesting proposals, the lecturers have particularly highlighted the fact that some of them demand the use of <strong>information and communication technology (ICT)<\/strong>\u00a0in the day-to-day practice of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in an essay entitled \u201cLa crisis de la representaci\u00f3n en la democracia actual\u201d (\u201cthe crisis of representation in contemporary democracy\u201d),\u00a0<strong>Ariel Galarza\u00a0<\/strong>puts forward the view that representative \u00a0\u00a0democracy can be improved by incorporating elements of participatory democracy, including legal mechanisms for the greater political interaction of citizens in their communities and greater control over elected politicians.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018The students have proposed some very creative solutions based on real research. But this is just the beginning\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He also recommends taking greater advantage of the possibilities of ICT \u201cto submit complaints, criticisms and proposals, which can, if they are feasible, then be weighed up and form part of the country\u2019s political debate\u2026 In this way, governments can reinvent themselves and evolve thanks to citizen participation.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132675\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-132675 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jmjmkj.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jmjmkj.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jmjmkj-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jmjmkj-150x188.jpg 150w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jmjmkj-300x375.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jmjmkj-696x871.jpg 696w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jmjmkj-336x420.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elia Amiguet thinks that the hard work has been worth it, because of how much she has learnt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Elia Amiguet\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>proposal is to create an app to facilitate citizen participation in political decisions. In her essay, \u201cParticipaci\u00f3n extensiva como soluci\u00f3n a la crisis de representaci\u00f3n\u201d (\u201cExtensive participation as a solution to the crisis of representation\u201d), she maintains that by using this new channel of citizen participation, Spanish voters would feel much more involved in politics because they would perceive that \u201cthere is a real chance that their opinions would be taken into account or that something they do not like might be changed (or, at least, that they could try to do so.)\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Education and freedom of expression<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Andrea Nicole Ruiz\u2019s<\/strong> proposal for the improvement of democracy is to make politics part of the curriculum in schools. \u201cTo live in a truly democratic society, where everyone without exception can enjoy all of their civil and political rights and where the state takes decisions which favour the country\u2019s political and economic stability, governments must be able to offer appropriate education,\u201d she believes. In her view, all countries must legislate to ensure that their education systems enable both curricular and extracurricular projects \u201cwhich put democracy and its values into practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The proposals include boosting political education and the use of technologies to encourage participation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Education is also the focus of her fellow student, <strong>Alejandra Corredera<\/strong>, in her essay entitled \u201cLa educaci\u00f3n como el gran medicamento de nuestro siglo\u201d (\u201cEducation as the medicine of our century\u201d). She writes: \u201cEducation is the solution our society needs. In his essay, \u201cLa libertad de expresi\u00f3n de John Stuart Mill en la democracia contempor\u00e1nea\u201d (\u201cJohn Stuart Mill\u2019s freedom of expression in contemporary democracy\u201d), he argues that the British philosopher\u2019s view on freedom of expression is not applicable to today\u2019s world and that limits should be placed on freedom of expression \u201cwhen this encourages physical or psychological violence against social groups on the basis of their age, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality or other variables.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>The students\u2019 experience<\/h4>\n<p>Regardless of the applicability of students\u2019 proposals, what is clear is this challenge has provided the students with a unique and unexpected learning opportunity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018To see the concepts that we learn in lectures applied to the real world makes it all much easier to understand\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI remember very clearly the moment when we were told, in the first few days of the degree, that we would have to write an essay on how to improve democracy and it scared me,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Elia Amiguet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, as time went on and we progressed through our courses, I felt more and more prepared to take on this challenge. The lecturers really helped us and gave us some great resources and advice, and then that initial fear disappeared. When I came to write the essay, I felt much more confident than I had been at the beginning of term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-132681\" src=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1301\" height=\"1241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh.jpg 1301w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-1060x1011.jpg 1060w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-768x733.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-1200x1145.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-150x143.jpg 150w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-696x664.jpg 696w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-1068x1019.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/jhh-440x420.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1301px) 100vw, 1301px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Her verdict on the project is very positive: \u201cIt\u2019s true that there\u2019s a lot of work to do, because you can\u2019t get it done in an hour (or two), but the result is worth it and, in the end, I felt proud of being able to do something which I\u2019d thought was impossible a few months before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fellow Political Science student,<strong> Franco Antonio Beramendi<\/strong>, feels the same way. \u201cIt has definitely been a great challenge, but I enjoyed bringing together what I\u2019ve learnt from different courses to answer such a big question. It\u2019s true that, as first-year undergraduates, our answers were always going to be rather simplistic, but, even so, I think it serves as an invitation to research this issue and learn more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The aim was to encourage these future political scientists to engage in in-depth and interdisciplinary reflection<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Learning for the future<\/h4>\n<p>And, as the students themselves say, the aim was not so much to discover magic formulas for such a complex issue, but to encourage these future political scientists to engage in an in-depth reflection on this problem and to connections between things they have learnt on different courses. But, most especially, the idea was to make the students the masters of their own learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that I\u2019ve learnt so much from this project, and in a different way from normal. I think it\u2019s a much more rewarding way of learning,\u201d said Elia Amiguet. \u201cI\u2019ll probably end up forgetting the theory I studied for my final exams, or at least part of it. But what I\u2019ve learnt through putting together this project feels different.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018This approach is really useful for us as Political Science students; I think it\u2019s a much more rewarding way of learning\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTo do this right, you have to write, research, think really hard about things and then hammer it all into shape. It\u2019s infinitely more useful for students, if you think about the long term. All of the other students I\u2019ve spoken to agree that it\u2019s really useful for us as Political Science students, and I\u2019d definitely recommend it to anyone who\u2019s thinking about doing this degree.
