(Programa Iberoamericano de Ciencia y Tecnolog\u00eda para el Desarrollo)\u00a0is supporting a project entitled \u201cUna Salud en Iberoam\u00e9rica y el Caribe, frente al cambio clim\u00e1tico y la p\u00e9rdida de biodiversidad\u201d<\/strong> (One Health for Latin America and the Caribbean, to Tackle Climate Change and the Loss of Biodiversity), presented by Chile\u2019s Fundaci\u00f3n Educaci\u00f3n y Ciencia and OHLAIC network (One Health\u00a0Latinoam\u00e9rica + Ibero y el Caribe).<\/p>\n<p>Over the next four years, Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/svega\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santiago Vega<\/a>, <strong>who holds a chair in animal health at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University<\/strong>,\u00a0will take part in this international project which aims to establish and consolidate \u00a0a <strong>One Health\u00a0network in order to tackle climate change and the loss of biodiversity in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy bringing together international experts in human, animal and environmental health, we can <strong>create a multidisciplinary network to develop methods and guidelines<\/strong>\u00a0which can minimize the effect of the loss of biodiversity and climate change\u201d said the CEU UCH lecturer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This One Health and Climate Change<\/strong> project aims to consolidate and strengthen the academic links between different research groups, fostering the exchange of scientific information, expertise, methods and technology regarding the effect of climate change in vulnerable ecosystems from the One Health perspective.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe ultimate objective is the consolidation of a world-leading Iberian and Latin American One Health network, and the creation of a research chair entitled \u201cUna Salud y Agenda 2030\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals<\/h4>\n<p>The\u00a0\u201cUna Salud en Iberoam\u00e9rica y el Caribe frente al cambio clim\u00e1tico\u201d project which the CEU UCH is participating in is <strong>one of 15 selected by CYTED<\/strong>, \u00a0from <strong>a total of 175 initiatives submitted<\/strong> by different groups in Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Brazil, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Spain and Portugal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This One Health\u00a0<\/strong>approach to dealing with climate change <strong>is a novel one in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe fact that the One Health approach is little used makes the creation of this network a real priority, ensuring effective cooperation between the different research groups and encouraging a joint effort to make progress on this issue\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This new Iberian and Latin American One Health Network will study the impact of climate change on human and animal health and the effect of the environmental impact on the loss of biodiversity in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The experts will also be able to determine <strong>the amount of progress made<\/strong>\u00a0towards each country\u2019s commitments to the <strong>UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong>, particularly Goal 3 (Health and Wellbeing), 5 (Gender Equality), 11 (Cities), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land).<\/p>\n<p>The initiative will enable<strong> best practices and dissemination projects<\/strong> to be set up in academic and social contexts. This will include the creation of material aimed at raising awareness of health and climate change, which can be used in schools and different social settings, in order to consolidate cultural changes and opportunities to make SDG-related improvements in the community.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBy enabling communities to become better-informed of the issues, we can empower them to take care of the places they live in\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One Health\u00a0to save the planet<\/p>\n<p>For Professor Vega, \u201crecent scientific research has shown that <strong>the transmission of certain infectious diseases can be affected by climatic and environmental anomalies.<\/strong> All the forecasts seem to show that with global warming <strong>there will be more outbreaks of diseases transmitted by vectors<\/strong> such as mosquitos and ticks. This increase will be felt particularly in temperate areas, as temperatures increase and rainfall patterns change.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBy tackling climate change, we can prevent future pandemics.\u00a0By taking care of the health of the planet, we can take care of our own health. This is what \u2018One World, One Health\u2019 really means\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a proponent of the<strong> One Health<\/strong> approach, Professor Santiago Vega is a co-author of the book <a href=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/un-enfoque-one-health-para-preservar-el-planeta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Health: cambio clim\u00e1tico, contaminaci\u00f3n ambiental y el impacto sobre la salud humana y animal<\/a>\u00a0in which he and 30 other international experts explore the interaction between human health, animal health and our ecosystem, and propose new strategies for the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the support of CYTED (an organization supporting scientific and technological development in Latin America), this international project will enable the creation of a One Health network with the aim of minimizing the effects of climate change in Latin America. \u201cBy tackling climate change, we can prevent future pandemics.
