That\u2019s what he did during his talk at <a href=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/world-watchers-mas-de-40-actividades-en-torno-a-los-ods-en-la-semana-de-la-sostenibilidad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEU\u2019s Sustainability Week<\/a>, where he showed how SMEs can contribute positively to society while achieving their main business objectives. And this is also an area in which universities have much to contribute, according to this <a href=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/eduardo-garcia-por-una-educacion-inclusiva-y-transformadora\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEU Law graduate<\/a>. Students can be the drivers of change too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve said that you support the creation of both inward and outward transformative processes for organizations. What do you mean by that?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think we\u2019re all agreed that there are many things in the world that need changing. We\u2019re not taking good care of the planet \u2013 the thing that, in the end, is what is keeping us all alive. There are too many people suffering from poverty, hunger and easily treatable diseases. Too much unemployment. To change this, <strong>we need to get everyone involved, governments, the general public, universities and research organizations.<\/strong> And business too. That\u2019s the view of the United Nations and that\u2019s what the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda are all about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve stressed the importance of \u201cbringing people and institutions together to work for the common good and build a better world and society\u201d. What can or should SMEs do about sustainability?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SMEs do and have done a lot of socially responsible work. Small and medium-sized companies have always contributed positively to the context they are in. There are so <strong>many examples of SMEs supporting their area\u2019s sports club, or the local festivals, or partnering up with social organizations<\/strong> and so on. They\u2019ve always done that \u2013 it just wasn\u2019t called CSR. Maybe they were the first to \u2018do\u2019 sustainability. Now we dress it up, we reflect on it more, there\u2019s more of an intellectual depth and we call it corporate social responsibility, but in essence it\u2019s the same thing: to go beyond what is legally necessary and contribute to the society in which the company is embedded. The European Union is taking some interesting steps forward in this respect. For me, this is the future.\u00a0<strong>The transition towards a green economy is absolutely necessary and cannot be delayed.<\/strong> The EU directives will probably mark the way forward and that could be a good thing, especially if it\u2019s linked to other issues such as social justice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you think it\u2019s important to combine CSR and the SDGs with companies\u2019 general business strategy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s crucial to ensure that consistency within the company. To really make you CSR approach transformative, it must be consistent with the company\u2019s overall business strategy and be present and influential in across every area and department.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should organizations, companies and institutions do to increase the visibility of their sustainability activities, as a way of raising public awareness?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We need to listen to what people say, what they want and what they are interested in. We have to work together more, something which is part of the UN\u2019s Goal 17, regarding building partnerships. <strong>It\u2019s not about creating some of kind of smokescreen or<a href=\"https:\/\/bloo.media\/blog\/greenwashing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> doing \u201cgreenwashing\u201d<\/a>, but about being transparent and telling people about the good things we do.<\/strong> But we also need to talk about areas for improvement, especially in order to find partners who can help us improve. We need to do much more to encourage this kind of mutual support.<\/p>\n<h3>CSR during a pandemic<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/es\/es\/pages\/about-deloitte\/articles\/informe-impacto-social-empresas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deloitte\u2019s\u00a0recent report on companies\u2019 social impact in Spain<\/a>\u00a0found that the main investments in 2019 focused on education, health and social welfare. Do you think that we\u2019ll see roughly the same distribution now or that, given the current health crisis, we\u2019ll see a switch in some areas?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Logically, given the situation we\u2019re in, the most visible things are health-related. But, as I see it, it shouldn\u2019t be about following \u201cfashion\u201d or what\u2019s \u201chot\u201d at the current time, but <strong>about each company focusing on how it can best make a contribution<\/strong> and thinking about what areas its contribution can really stand out and make a difference. There\u2019s no shortage of important issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eduardo-garc%C3%ADa-ribera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Based on your experience<\/a>, how can society and individuals come together and increase the work being done on sustainability?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have to be more demanding. Surveys show that increasing numbers of people want companies to act ethically. They want their favourite brands to be truly committed to resolving the great problems affecting the world. We know, from these same surveys, that almost three out of every four people are prepared to pay more for a product if they know that, by doing so, they are contributing to a humanitarian or social cause. <strong>The general public\u2019s ethical conscience is and will continue to be the wind in our sails that we need,<\/strong> pushing us towards greater commitment to avoiding negative impacts on our environment.<\/p>\n<h3>Greater social commitment<\/h3>\n<p><strong>What can the University do to raise student awareness of sustainability issues?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Universities are the key to driving the reflection we need. I\u2019ve been lucky enough to sit down with academics who are experts in these issues and I\u2019m convinced that they have an indispensable role to play. They are educating the next generation of business and social leaders and so <strong>it\u2019s crucially important that social and environmental issues are present in all study programmes.<\/strong> Research, education and awareness-raising activities in respect of these issues must have great prominence at university. And this should happen with the support of the other stakeholders in development: companies, social organizations and government. \u00a0We have to use research and put it to practical use as soon as possible. Again, \u201cmulti-stakeholder partnerships\u201d are the key.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What benefits do companies that work with<a href=\"https:\/\/intered.org\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Fundaci\u00f3n InteRed ONGD<\/a> gain?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many. What this means is that our work is transformative, effective and efficient. And that\u2019s a good reason to trust InteRed.
