Students in the degree programmes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.com\/en\/studies\/degree\/pharmacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pharmacy<\/a> and <strong>Physiotherapy<\/strong> attended this session: participants also included <strong>Juan Jos\u00e9 Soler<\/strong>, Coordinator of the Valencian Community\u2019s COPD Programme and Pulmonologist of Arnau de Vilanova Hospital; <strong>Santos Aznar<\/strong>, Community Pharmacist; and<strong> Jos\u00e9 Vidal<\/strong>, a COPD patient. The talk was moderated by Professor of Pharmacy at CEU UCH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.es\/directorio\/luis-salar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Salar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Coordinator of the COPD Programme provided a general view of this disease which he described as \u201cdiverse and complex\u201d. Soler highlighted that the main problems of COPD are the underdiagnosis, its high mortality rate, and the need to improve the treatment of the patients. In this respect, the coordinator placed value on the community pharmacists \u201cin the active search for COPD patients\u201d, and emphasised the necessary collaboration of all health workers to reduce the high rate of underdiagnosis of this disease.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-102419\" src=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/epoc-miercolesdesalud.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/epoc-miercolesdesalud.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/epoc-miercolesdesalud-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/epoc-miercolesdesalud-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/epoc-miercolesdesalud-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/epoc-miercolesdesalud-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/medios.uchceu.es\/actualidad-ceu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/epoc-miercolesdesalud-630x420.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3000px) 100vw, 3000px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The coordinator of the Valencian Community\u2019s COPD Programme and pulmonologist of Arnau de Vilanova Hospital reminded that this disease, the third biggest cause of death in the world, has a high rate of underdiagnosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Concerning the treatments, Soler reminded that COPD is nowadays approached from the point of view of clinical phenotypes. Groups of patients are identified by similar characteristics to offer them the most suitable treatment: however, \u201cthe future is in biological treatments, in personalised medicine for COPD patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ensuring the compliance to treatment<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pharmacist Santos Aznar addressed the role of the community pharmacy in the treatment of this disease, in first making sure that the patient is using their medication correctly and then monitoring to detect any problems that may arise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, he highlighted the important role the community pharmacy can have in preventing and screening the disease. Since tobacco is the principal and almost the only cause of COPD, the fight against tobacco use is essential and the pharmacy is in a good position to do that. On the other hand, screening COPD is very simple and pharmacies can contribute to reducing its high rate of underdiagnosis. Doctor Soler has conducted a study with community pharmacies in Barcelona that supports this claim.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pharmacy, a crucial link in the treatment of diseases<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For his part, Jos\u00e9 Vidal, a COPD patient, shared with the students of CEU his experience with the disease and the lessened quality of life it has meant. Vidal also emphasised the role of the pharmaceutical professional as \u201ca crucial link in the treatment of diseases.
