The <strong>stiffness of the arterial wall<\/strong> can be determined through the pulse wave velocity, which can be measured by use of an applanation tonometer. Rodilla, who is a medical professor at the Castell\u00f3n campus of CEU Cardenal Herrera University, and his team discovered that this stiffness has predictive value for the development of <strong>hypertension<\/strong>. This suggests that <strong>arterial stiffness<\/strong>, instead of being a consequence of high blood pressure, might be its cause. <strong>Stiffness of the arterial walls<\/strong> can, in other words, be the best predictor of this pathology.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>professor Rodilla<\/strong>, \u201chigh blood pressure \u2013 more than 140\/90 mmHg \u2013 is one of the most frequent pathologies in modern society, and it is the most important risk factor of cardiovascular illness, which still is the number one cause of death in Spain. However, in the vast majority of cases the mechanism that causes high blood pressure is unknown.\u201d On the other hand, investigation techniques were developed the last few years that enable measuring the harm associated with high blood pressure, on the level of the vascular as well as cardiac and renal system.<\/p>\n<p>Patients that suffer from <strong>hypertension<\/strong> have stiff arteries \u2013 that is, the <strong>artery walls<\/strong> have lost their elasticity \u2013 and, therefore, \u201cthe research question that we asked ourselves at the start of our investigation was whether it is high blood pressure that hardens the arteries or whether it is stiff arteries that increase blood pressure,\u201d says Rodilla.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cause or consequence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The research that was <strong>awarded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arterysociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artery<\/a><\/strong> studied 125 patients with normal blood pressure. The investigators determined the stiffness of the artery walls and vascular injury with a tonometer, which measures the oscillations produced by the pulse in the arteries, at the start of the investigation and after a year had passed. \u201cThe group of patients that at the start of the investigation had <strong>stiffer artery walls<\/strong>, though normal blood pressure, developed <strong>hypertension<\/strong>, while the patients who initially had lower blood pressure a year later still had normal blood pressure values,\u201d professor Rodilla says. \u201cThis suggests that <strong>it is stiffness of the arterial walls that causes hypertension<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research was carried out at the Unit of Hypertension and Vascular Risk, which belongs to the Department of Internal Medicine at the Hospital of Sagunto and was conducted by Enrique Rodilla Sala, who is CEU-UCH Professor of Medicine at the Castell\u00f3n campus. Two students of the fourth year in Medicine at the same campus worked as interns on the project. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arterysociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Artery<\/strong><\/a> jury, which met in Maastricht from October 9 to 11, awarded the research, titled \u2018Elevated arterial stiffness precedes development of hypertension in never treated prehypertensive patients\u2019 the second price.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research career<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The team led by <strong>CEU-UCH Professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.com\/en\/studies\/degree\/medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medicine<\/a> Enrique Rodilla Sala<\/strong> has a long trajectory in the study of <strong>hypertension<\/strong> and target organ damage; in other words, disturbances that occur in various organs when these are chronically affected by hypertension. He recently cooperated with two researchers of the University of Valencia, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Pascual and Josep Red\u00f3n, on a <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/jhypertension\/Abstract\/2013\/08000\/Regression_of_left_ventricular_hypertrophy_and.27.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report published by the <em>Journal of Hypertension<\/em><\/a> (an international medical journal) in which they investigated how in <strong>hypertensive<\/strong> patients the regression of left ventricular hypertrophy, as marker of cardiac damage, is associated with parallel changes in microalbuminuria, a type of kidney damage.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, <strong>professor Enrique Rodilla<\/strong> has formed part of an international group of researchers that determined the normal values of the central blood pressure. This group was led by Stephan Laurent, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Paris Descartes University. Rodilla also works together with Karl-Heinz Herzig, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oulu, Finland.<\/p>\n<p>The Unit of Hypertension and Vascular Risk at the Hospital of Sagunto, where <strong>professor Rodill<\/strong>a works, convened with <strong>CEU-UCH Cardenal Herrera University that students of the Bachelor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.com\/en\/studies\/degree\/medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medicine<\/a> at the campus in Castell\u00f3n<\/strong> from the fourth year on can do an <strong>internship<\/strong> with them. The aim in this is to involve them in <strong>clinical investigation<\/strong>, so that they can put the knowledge they acquire in class into
